Citizen Diplomacy Award

We are thrilled to announce the Alliance’s participation in this year’s State Department Citizen Diplomacy Award – an initiative recognizing American citizens and organizations leading efforts to renew and strengthen U.S. relationships with the world. As a nominating partner, the Alliance is now accepting applications for the 2021 award. All submissions are due to the Alliance by Monday, August 16.

Since its inaugural year in 2017, the Citizen Diplomacy Award has sought to highlight individuals, organizations, or initiatives that advance U.S. foreign policy objectives. Take a look back at the 2020, 20192018, and 2017 award winners for more information.

The State Department is looking for candidates that generate impactful, long-term support for U.S. foreign policy objectives in the public affairs and public diplomacy domains. They should also demonstrate management of important international relationships while serving as frontline advocates for U.S. values. The awardee will be honored by the State Department in a ceremony this fall.

Instructions for nominating

Nominations must cite strong, illustrative examples of the nominee’s work on public diplomacy directly linked to U.S. foreign policy objectives. Nomination applications will include an executive summary of fifty words or less and a prompted long answer.

All U.S. citizens and U.S. non-governmental organizations, philanthropies, and other private institutions are eligible for nomination. This award is intended to recognize activities and achievements that are not directly funded by federal grants, therefore entities that receive direct funding from the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development are not eligible for this award.

Please refer to the below selection criteria when nominating an individual, organization, or initiative:

  1. Initiatives that advance U.S. foreign policy objectives, including the promotion of exchanges and partnerships.
  2. Individuals, or organizations, generating impactful, long-term support for U.S. foreign policy objectives in the public affairs and public diplomacy domains.
  3. Individuals, or organizations, working to renew and strengthen important international relationships while serving as frontline advocates for our values.

All questions can be addressed to Evelyn Adams (eadams@alliance-exchange.org). We encourage you to consider nominating an individual, organization, or initiative that embodies the award’s mission and fits the above criteria. Applications must be submitted by Monday, August 16. We look forward to receiving your nominations.
