Seven institutions were chosen to receive the 2016 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization and the Spotlight Award from NAFSA: Association of International Educators. The 14th annual report Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities highlights each awardee institution for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments in internationalizing American campuses.

New data from NAFSA: Association of International Educators found that the one million international students who studied at U.S. colleges and universities during the 2015-16 academic year contributed $32.8 billion to the U.S. economy. According to NAFSA'S analysis released on November 14, the economic impact translates into support of more than 400,000 jobs – a 7% increase from the previous year.

The number of international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities has reached a record number of over one million, according to 2016 Open Doors data released this week by the Institute of International Education (IIE). This 7.1 percent increase for the 2015-2016 school year marks the tenth consecutive year of reported expansion in the total number of international students in U.S. higher education.

Last week, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through December 9th, preventing a government shutdown after the close of the fiscal year on September 30.

The CR provides $54.4 billion for the International Affairs Budget, including Department of State exchange programs. Due to a required across-the-board cut, the CR funding level is slightly below the current spending level of $54.6 billion, but is close to the administration’s FY2017 budget request of $54.3 billion.

U.S. Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) re-introduced the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Program Act, a bipartisan legislation that would expand opportunities for students at U.S. colleges and universities to obtain study abroad experiences through the U.S. Department of Education.
