U.S. market share of foreign students declines, OECD reports

The United States market share of internationally mobile post-secondary students has declined over the past 8 years, according to a recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education. According to the OECD report, the U.S. market share dropped from 26 per cent in 2000 to 18.7 per cent in 2008. The Chronicle reports that Australia and Russia have increased their shares of foreign students by one and two percentage points, respectively.

The Chronicle also notes that Australian universities have by far the largest percentage of international students: 22 per cent of all students enrolled at Australian universities come from abroad, compared to three per cent of the students attending U.S. universities.
