Visitors to the U.S. to pay tourism promotion fee starting Wednesday
Beginning Wednesday, September 8, tourists to the U.S. from the 36 countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program will have to pay a fee of $14 to register in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), CNN reports. This $14 fee consists of $4 to cover ESTA operating costs and a $10 tourism promotion fee that covers a period of two years for each traveler, the article notes.
The $10 tourism promotion fee was included in the Travel Promotion Act approved by the U.S. Senate in September 2009 and signed by President Obama in early March of this year. This Act is designed to promote the United States as a travel destination for foreign tourists and, as reported by the Huffington Post and the LA Times, to benefit the U.S. economy and the country’s image abroad.
