That bitter sweet moment when you have to return home after being somewhat of a surrogate mom in the U.S. for two years. The day when leaving the two-year-old who has been a constant companion since your arrival, has come and you’re headed back to see your own family.

Doreen Mueller returned home to Germany this past year and her heart practically broke having to leave the family and friends she made during her two-year stay as an Au Pair.

Participating in an American tradition, 15 Pennsylvania au pairs recently packed 50 Operation Christmas Child boxes filled with donations from their friends, their host families and themselves for children in need around the world.

Shortly after their arrival in the U.S., a group of SWT participants was given the chance to engage with the local community at a volunteering event, where participants learned about the important aspect of volunteerism in American culture and got to practice their English.

To create such a learning experience and facilitate a true sense of community, AuPairCare brought together its au pairs, their host families and local area staff at the Houston Museum of Natural Science this month to celebrate AuPairCare’s annual International Host Family Day.

Host families on the J-1 Secondary School program open their hearts and homes to foreign exchange students from around the world for a period of 5 months up to one academic year. CCI Greenheart's host parents, Gretchen and Mike, have hosted two foreign exchange students with disabilites, Natasha and Faruk. While Gretchen and Mike have found the experience of hosting foreign exchange students with disabilities challenging at times, they agree that overall it has been a deeply rewarding experience.

Local Coordinator Jennifer Tausworthe and twelve CCI Greenheart exchange students recently completed a Greenheart Project that involved cleaning up beaches in Texas. Greenheart Projects are environmental or social service projects that are designed to introduce CCI Greenheart students to volunteering, while also developing deeper connections with their host communities.

Last month, AuPairCare au pairs from Buffalo, NY took a day trip to one of America’s most popular tourist attractions: the Niagara Falls. The au pairs enjoyed the American side of the falls by strolling through the state park, riding the Maid of the Mist and taking photos that they could share with their friends and family in their home countries.

In 2008, the U.S. Department of State made it possible for au pairs to return to the U.S. as au pairs for a second time—either with their previous host family or a new family. All au pairs who successfully complete 12+ months as an au pair the first time around and who have lived outside the U.S. for at least two years are eligible for this opportunity.
