The Senate Appropriations Committee released its report this week detailing legislation approved last Thursday that includes $545.25 million for State Department exchanges in fiscal year (FY) 2009. The Senate version of the bill includes a $23 million increase for exchanges over the Administration’s FY 2009 request, and a $44 million increase over current FY 2008 levels.

Congressional appropriations committees in both chambers approved funding increases this week for State Department exchange programs.

In action today, the Senate Appropriations Committee marked up a bill that included $545.25 million for State exchanges in FY09, a $44 million increase over the White House request.

After months of negotiations, Congress last week approved a $186.5 billion supplemental spending bill for FY 2008 which includes $10 million in funding for exchanges with Africa and Central America. The package, which President Bush signed into law yesterday, provides funding for another year of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also greatly expands GI Bill education benefits for veterans of the two wars, provides an extension of unemployment insurance and funds for disaster relief to address recent flooding in the Midwest, among other domestic items.
