Rep. William Delahunt (D-MA) yesterday outlined a new proposal that would fund 30,000 scholarships a year for low-income undergraduate students from developing countries to study in the U.S. Delahunt, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight, is working on this Uniting Students in America, or USA Scholarship program proposal with Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), chair of the Education and Labor Committee’s Subcommittee on Higher Education. The two representatives chaired held a joint hearing to explore the proposal.
The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight Wednesday released a new report entitled “The Decline in America’s Reputation: Why?”, summarizing a series of 10 hearings the subcommittee held last year about international opinion about the United States and its foreign policies.
The Undersecretary for Management has approved the establishment of a new position, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Private Sector Exchanges, within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This position has been created to institutionalize the Department's commitment to strategic partnership with private sector, academic, and NGO communities in developing and expanding educational and cultural exchange initiatives. Assistant Secretary Goli Ameri has selected Stanley Colvin to fill this important new role in ECA. Mr. Colvin is located in room 734 of SA-44 and can be reached on 202-203-7415.
The U.S. Senate last night confirmed the nominations of James K. Glassman to be Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and Janice L. Jacobs to be Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs. Glassman replaces Karen Hughes. Jacobs replaces Maura Harty.
The Alliance is pleased to welcome a new intern, Ms. Jekaterina Bojarkina. Jekaterina recently graduated from Vilnius University with a bachelor's degree in international business. She had her first U.S. exchange experience in 2007, as a summer work/travel student in Bethany Beach, Delaware.
