The Senate last night approved the continuing resolution (CR) to keep government programs, including the State Department’s educational and cultural exchanges, running at fiscal year (FY) 2007 levels until November 16, 2007. The House of Representatives passed a bill this afternoon that will continue funding the programs of the federal government at current fiscal year (FY) 2007 levels through November 16, 2007. With all 12 annual appropriations bills still incomplete, the bill will allow all government programs to continue operating at current funding levels. This includes the State Department’s educational and cultural exchange programs whose funding level stands at $445.2 million. The current fiscal year, FY 2007, ends Sunday, September 30.

The U.S. Senate last night approved legislation to fund the State Department’s educational and cultural exchange programs at $509.4 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2008. The State-Foreign Operations Appropriations legislation was approved by a vote of 81 to 12. The funding level for exchanges in $8 million above the $501.4 million approved by the House of Representatives, and $23 million above the $486.4 million requested by the President. Current year exchanges funding stands at $445.2 million.
