September 2005
The Senate last week passed its version of legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in FY 2006 at $31.86 billion, an increase of $1.29 billion over the President’s budget request, and $1.06 billion above the House approved version of the bill. The House passed its bill in May.
Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT), one of the chief sponsors of H.R. 1504, the Youth Exchange Support Act, spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon about the importance of international exchange programs, particularly for youth. He highlighted the legislation, introduced in conjunction with Rep. Robert Andrews (D-NJ), which would ease the financial burden of hosting foreign exchange students by increasing the tax deduction for host families to $200 per month. Bishop encouraged his colleagues in the House to support and cosponsor the bill.
According to a news report from Congressional Quarterly (CQ) this afternoon, the House of Representatives passed legislation earlier today that would grant “special immigrant status” to immigrants displaced by Hurricane Katrina to ensure they receive certain benefits and humanitarian relief. The bill would allow foreign students with visas to remain in the U.S. until February 1, 2006 so they can enroll in a new school.
