N T E R N S H I P
The Alliance offers flexible internships available
throughout the year, part-time or full-time. Interns are typically
unpaid, although a small stipend may be available depending on qualifications
of the intern and the projects to be completed.
Note: The Alliance does not administer
international exchange programs - our primary activity is
government relations and our focus is Washington, DC. For more information
on working directly with international exchange programs, contact
an
Alliance member organization.

Basic qualifications required for the
internship include:
good communication, research
and writing skills;
Web savvy, computer literate (MS Office);
an interest in working in a small office environment;
and,
a commitment to international exchanges and/or
public policy.
Preferred requirements include:
basic journalism or other extensive writing
experience;
understanding of the congressional budget
cycle or other political involvement; and,
current upperclass undergraduate, or graduate
student.
Job Duties include participation in a number of projects
and opportunities, such as:
marketing and distribution of the International
Exchange Locator, a comprehensive directory of private
organizations, government agencies, and congressional staff active
in international exchange, published jointly with the Department
of State.
the publication of the Policy
Monitor,
a quarterly journal, and News News News, a newsletter informing members and subscribers
of current public policy issues that affect the field of international
exchange.
accompanying or representing Alliance staff
to Capitol Hill, State Department, or USAID for selected meetings,
briefings, and hearings, and attending Alliance task force meetings,
various conference sessions, board meetings, coalition meetings,
and more.
development of materials for use in advocacy
for the exchange community, both in Congress and the executive
branch.
administrative staff support, including opportunities
for web development or database management experience.
Recent Interns :
Jacob Jones (Summer 2004)
Albany, TX
Jacob is a junior at the Georgetown University's McDonough School
of
Business in Washington, D.C., where he is pursuing a double major
in
international business and finance, and a minor in psychology.
Jacob
worked for two summers as an intern with the Alliance Abroad Group
in
Austin, Texas. He will spend the fall semester studying in Hong
Kong.
Alex McGuirk (Winter 2003-04)
Sydney, Australia
Alex is a fourth year student at the University of Technology
in Sydney, with a double major in environmental engineering and
international studies. Before coming to the U.S. on a summer work/travel
program sponsored by the Association for International Practical
Training (AIPT), she completed a year studying abroad in Concepcion,
Chile.
Following her internship at the Alliance, Alex returned to
Australia. She is currently studying in Monterrey, Mexico.
Yin Kuan Ho (Winter 2002-03)
Melbourne, Australia
Yin joined the Alliance as a summer work/travel
student sponsored by the Association for International Practical
Training (AIPT). An Australian citizen, Yin received her Bachelor
of Music degree with honors from Melbourne University in 2001
and is currently working toward a second degree in law from Melbourne
University with a major in political science.
